Dividend Growth Stock Update Q3/2017 - These Are The Champs

Here is a look at the DG50's income growth in the July-September period compared to the third quarter of 2016:

Despite Market Sell-Off: 16 S&P 500 Stocks Close To Fresh 52-Week Highs

Stock markets are in correction mode but not all stocks declined within the past months.

Not so surprisingly, they’re mostly defensive names like staples and utilities.

After all, we’ll need to stock up on plenty of cans of Campbell soup and Hormel SPAM for our bunkers to ride out the market volatility (not to mention the 2016 elections!).

Looking back at 2011, not only did most of these stocks perform respectably during the 2011 selloff, they participated in the rally back (although on a low beta).Attached you will find a selection of stocks near 52-Week Highs.

Only 16 companies from the S&P 500 have achieved this.

20 Top Yielding Electic Utilites With Sustainable Dividend Payouts For Growth

Well-managed electric utilities are excellent candidates for a dividend reinvestment portfolio. Typically, electric utilities generate lots of excess cash and pay it out as dividends to shareholders.

But not all utilities are equal. Some pay high amounts of their net income to shareholders in form of dividends, other only a small part. Be very wary of stocks with high dividend yields and high payout ratios. They are not sustainable and increase the debt level of the company over the long-term.

I'm looking for those utilities with low dividend payouts in order to get sustainable dividend payments over years that might grow, year over year for decades.

Attached you can find a detailed list of 20 electric utilities that might give investors a small hedge due to a solid dividend growth history and sustainable dividend payouts.

These are the 4 top yielding results in detail...

38 Dividend Growth Utilities With A Solid Finance Basis Or Earnings Growth

If there is one thing every investor can appreciate, it is a growing stream of reliable dividends. With the Federal Reserve aiming to raise rates in December, the rate sensitive stocks have seen some price declines.

One of those rate sensitive sectors is the utility sector. To help investors find some of the best companies in the sector, I began researching those utility stocks with at least 5 straight years of dividend increases. 54 companies are part of the results. That's a huge number which I want to reduce by implementing higher restrictions. More about this method can be read below.

Some investors like to build their dividend growth portfolio with very different strategies. One trick that I have found can help investors stay on track is to mentally consider the costs they will need to pay each month of their life and to set a goal for covering those costs with dividend income.

There is a beautiful irony in being able to cover the costs an investor faces in their life with a dividend check from the same company that is selling them a product. When it comes to the utility companies, it makes sense to have a more diversified portfolio rather than simply owning the utility that covers the investor's primary residence.

The simple geographic risk of a natural disaster impacting the company and the investor's life at the same time makes it ideal to use a portfolio with at least a few different utility companies, even when the investor wants to use a utility dividend check to pay for their cost.

Utilities are mostly not diversified but you can do it on your own by investing smaller amounts into several sub-industries.

I've created two charts from my dividend growth utility database. The first table lists all utilities with a debt-to-equity ratio below one. I think its also important to have a look at financial ratios, especially when rates go up in the near future.

The second chart gives an overview of dividend growth utilities with a predicted 5% earnings growth for the next five years. It's a more bullish view on future earnings.

30 High-Margin Stocks With Strong Competitive Advantages

Investing into high margin companies could end in a better return. The underlying thought is simple: A companies that works on higher margin can survive a market correction more likely and become stronger after a recession.

Attached, you can find a list of companies with high profit margins. Those could be a first step to start a further research.

In general, the margin tells us something about the competition as well as the business model.

High margins mean that the corporate make many business processing steps by it. The competition is less hard. Products are unique and could have a market barrier.

Here is the selection of high-margin stocks...

George Soros Highest Yielding Dividend Stocks

Beside Warren Buffett, George Soros is also a popular investor. He was born in 1930 in Hungary where he fled in 1947 to avoid the onset of communism.

Soros went to England where he graduated from the London School of Economics. He then moved to the United States and eventually opened his own hedge fund which would later be called the Quantum Fund.

Here are four high-yield holdings in that fund. Soros managed to achieve a 30% annual return with high Quantum Fund.

Today I like to introduce those stocks from his portfolio with high yields. Here are the highest yielding large cap results:

These Dividend Contenders May Rise Dividends Within The Next 3 Months

Recently, I wrote about DividendChampions that may rise dividends within the next 3 months in order to keep their status as dividend grower alive.

It's fantstic to know what companies should hike it's dividends because the current yields are so low that each investor get tears in his eyes.

A potential dividend hike could lift the current dividend yield on a new level.

Today I like to introduce some Dividend Contenders with potential to hike dividends over the next quarter. As a result, I found 20 companies; nine of them yield over 3 percent.

Dividend Growth is a wonderful investing space on which I personally spend a lot of time.

I love it to see dividends grow but it's only possible if a company grows and has low debt ratios.

These are my 6 highlights...

Xcel Energy (XEL): An Electric Utility Stock Added To The Passive Income Portfolio

I’ve only two trades to hit the $3,000 expected dividend income by the end of this year. On the last trading day of the week, I decided to buy a new stake from the utility sector. It was the electric utility stock Xcel Energy. I was impressed about the solid earnings and dividend growth in the past. For sure the debt ratios are not impressive but for a utility company almost solid.

I purchased 50 shares at $28.21 which resulted in $1,410.50 total investment cost. The stake should increase the current portfolio income by $55 bucks per year to a total estimated amount of $2,934.19. That’s very close to my minimum target of $3,000.

Earnings and Dividends of Xcel Energy

XEL has a low forward P/E of 14.17 and yields at 3.97 percent. That’s a good number in my view because earnings are expected to grow by 6.70 percent for the next five years.

--------------------------------------
For readers who are new to the matter and my dividend growth philosophy: I funded a virtual portfolio with 100k on October 04, 2012 with the aim to build a passive income stream that doubles each five to ten years. I plan to purchase each week one stock holding until the money is fully invested. The total number of constituents is expected at 50 – 70 companies and the dividend income should be at least at $3,000 per year.
--------------------------------------

Stockholdings of the Dividend Yield Passive Income Portfolio are up 9.99 on average. Due to the high cash amounts over the recent year, the total performance is only at 10.21 percent. The major indices increased by 20 to 35 percent.

Latest Portfolio Performance (Click to enlarge)

For sure, the portfolio did not beat the market, but was not really invested. The major goal is also not to make quick money. The aim is to create a stable dividend income that doubles each ten years or less.

With remaining cash of $14,677, it’s still possible to boost the current income by $500 bucks but I plan to hold a significant amount of cash in order to be liquid when the markets are losing ground. Only in falling markets raises the possibility to get cheap long-term bets.
