What Is a Dividend King?
Simple: a U.S. company that has raised its dividend for at least 50 consecutive years. No other requirements — no size rule, no index membership. Only about 50–58 companies currently qualify, depending on the source. Unlike the better-known Dividend Aristocrats (25 years, must be in the S&P 500), there's no single official list — independent researchers track this one.
Why It Matters
A dividend can't be dressed up with accounting tricks — it has to come from real cash flow. A 50-year unbroken streak shows serious financial discipline. A few well-known names:
- Procter & Gamble – ~70 years
- Johnson & Johnson – ~64 years
- Coca-Cola – ~64 years
These companies kept raising payouts through nine recessions.
But the Streak Isn't a Guarantee
Even long-time Kings can fall. 3M was a King for decades — until it finally broke the streak. So treat this as a research starting point, not a buy signal. Before investing, check:
- payout ratio (ideally vs. free cash flow)
- recent dividend growth rate
- debt levels
- current valuation
Bottom Line
Dividend Kings are a strong quality signal — but a backward-looking one. Use the list to find candidates worth researching, not as a finished investment decision.
